‘They Just Won the Olympics’: Internet Goes Crazy Over Mongolia’s Paris 2024 Outfits

Move over Lululemon, Berluti, and Ralph Lauren—the internet has a new favorite national uniform for the Paris 2024 Olympics: Mongolia's.

Unveiled earlier this month, Mongolia’s opening and closing ceremony outfits feature intricately embroidered vests, pleated robes, and traditional-inspired accessories that have captivated social media. The designs, created by the Ulaanbaatar-based label Michel&Amazonka, merge Mongolian tradition with contemporary flair.

Michel&Amazonka’s creations showcase ceremonial earrings and embroidered bags for female athletes, and archery hats, belts, and traditional Mongolian boots for male flag-bearers. The outfits prominently feature Mongolia's national colors—blue, red, and white—alongside traditional patterns and motifs like the “Soyombo” symbol from the country’s flag, as well as Parisian and Olympic icons such as the Eiffel Tower and the Olympic flame.

According to the Mongolian National Olympic Committee, each outfit took an average of 20 hours to craft. The designs have caused a sensation on social media platforms, especially TikTok. Fashion and sports commentators have praised the outfits, with style writer Ryan Yip declaring, “They just won the Olympics before it even started” in a video that has garnered over 2 million views. Australian TikTok user Bee Jamieson described the detailing as “really beautiful,” while popular sports creator geoff0w_ called them “ridiculously hard.”

Michel&Amazonka, founded by sisters Michel Choigaalaa and Amazonka Choigaalaa, previously designed Mongolia’s outfits for the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics and Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics, where Mongolia secured one silver and three bronze medals.

Mongolia, which has participated in all but one summer Olympics since 1964, won its first and only gold medals in judo and boxing at the Beijing 2008 Games. This year, the country will send more than 30 athletes to Paris, competing in nine sports including cycling, shooting, and wrestling.

In addition to Mongolia's standout designs, Berluti is outfitting France, Ralph Lauren is dressing Team USA, and Great Britain has tapped menswear label Ben Sherman for their uniforms.
